Tips for Creating a Sensory-Friendly Work Space

Consider as many of your seven senses as possible
 1. Maintain a tidy desk; an organized work space can help you focus, and improve productivity

2. Post priorities in sight (bulletin board)-visual reminders of what is most important in your work day or personal day, change it often so it does not become “background” and you will visually attend to it.

3. Let there be light! (illumination assist,  encourage bright ideas): Task lighting is less stressful for your eyes and also helps illuminate the space; this draws your eyes towards your work.

4.  Make sure you have a comfortable place to sit, setting up a work space at the kitchen table will eventually cause discomfort in your back, neck, arms, and can cause headaches.  You need to have your feet reach the floor, preferably armrests, and a supportive back.

5. Add a floral accent (a spot of nature: have life in front of you): Even if you don't have a view of outside, something nature-based to look at and rest your eyes and can take a brief reprieve between tasks.

6. If you don't have a pleasant view, adding a simple trompe l’oeil image to the wall can help bring the outdoors in.
